• 9th October 2009: Magnus Carlsen wins Perl Springs category 21 super tournament with 8/10 score and probably the highest numerical performance rating ever in a tournament of 3002.  In the double-round robin Carlsen beat every opponent with white and beat Jakovenko twice.  He will also pass the 2800 mark in ELO on the next rating list, (something only Kasparov, Kramnik, Topalov, and Anand have ever done).
  • Anand beats Kramnik +3 -1 =7 to be recognised by the whole world as the undisputed world champion.
  • 30th September 2008 - Topalov is number 1 in the world on the October 2008 rating list 2791, followed by Morozevich 2787, Ivanchuk 2786, and Carlsen 2786.  Anand is 5th 2783 and Kramnik 6th 2772.
  • 19th september 2008 - Jan Werle wins the EU Individual Championship.  Short and Adams both finish half a point behind.
  • 13th September 2008 - Bilbao Grand Slam Final - Topalov (6.5/10) 2874 wins by 1.5 points, with Anand (4/10) 2693 surprisingly coming last, although the average rating of the six players was 2769 making it a category 22 event.
  • 1st September 2008 - Tal Memorial Blitz; a double round robin blitz tournament of 18 top players (15 of which rated over 2700).  Ivanchuk won with 23.5/34 (having already won the standard event), Kramnik 2nd with 22.5/34, and Carlsen 3rd with 21/34. 
  • 31st August 2008 - Wang Yue scored 8.5/10 in "Rising Stars Vs Experience" chess event, with a 2897 rating performance.
  • 27th August 2008 - Ivanchuk won the Tal Memorial event (10 player round robin) with 6/9 and a 2861 performance.
  • 4th August 2008 - Anand beats Carlsen 4-2 in rapid chess world championship final.
  • 31st July 2008 - Dominguez (6.5/10), 2790 and Alekseev (6.5/10), 2790 finish top in Biel, Alekseev winning on blitz tiebreak.  Carlsen (6/10), 2742 finished 3rd.
  • 8th July 2008 - Karjakin beats Short 7.5-2.5 in rapid match.
  • 6th July 2008 - Leko wins Dortmund (4.5/7) 2790, Kramnik finishes seventh out of eight (3/7) 2632.
  • 19th June 2008 - Carlsen wins Aerosvit (8/11), 2877.
  • 18th May 2008 - Ivanchuk wins Sofia (8/10), 2977!  The best tournament performance I've ever seen.  Topalov came 2nd (6.5/10), 2839, Radjabov came 3rd (5.5/10), 2769.  Aronian and Bu Xiangzhi finish last, (3/10).
